A man who drove the wrong way up Interstate 5 in downtown Seattle early Friday is in very critical condition after crashing with another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries.
State troopers responded to the crash scene, on I-5 near Spring Street, at about 3:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a wrong-way driver heading north on the freeway.
An investigation found that the driver, described as a man in his 20s, had come up from Interstate 90, via the Bellevue-Spokane exit, in the wrong direction.
He traveled in the far west lane for about two miles before suddenly veering across all lanes of traffic and colliding violently with a Durango heading the other direction.
Medics rushed the man to the hospital with “very critical” injuries. The driver of the Durango sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
