Six people were injured early Sunday morning when a suspected drunk driver heading the wrong way up Interstate 5 crashed head-on into another vehicle, the Washington State Patrol reported.
It was the latest in a series of wrong-way driving incidents on the heavily traveled freeway in recent weeks.
State troopers and medics rushed to the scene, in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the Southcenter exit, at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
An investigation found that a 26-year-old Seattle man in a 2000 Honda Civic somehow got headed north in the southbound lanes of I-5, in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic.
His car smashed head-on into a 2004 Hyundai Elantra heading south in the HOV lane with five occupants. The occupants, all teens from the Renton area, sustained a variety of injuries. Four of them were taken to Valley Medical Center and one was taken to Harborview Medical Center.
