State suspends license of accused daycare owner

The state has suspended the license of a Mercer Island daycare amid allegations that its owner attacked her boyfriend with a knife while children were in the house.

Laura Martin, 45, is due in court on Tuesday to face charges of malicious mischief and assault.

Her boyfriend, Mark Traxler, said Martin hit him with her fist and stabbed his side with a knife during a fight last week.

“She hit me four times,” said Traxler, who now has marks on his face. “She hit me with her left hand I knew that the knife, when I saw it, was in her right hand.”

Traxler, who had been dating Martin for about six weeks, said Martin called and asked him to visit her last Monday, apparently upset after being cited during a routine state inspection for not having enough child care providers on site.

He arrived to find her drunk, holding a knife and standing near her daycare assistant.
