An autopsy of a man who was shot by a 25-year police veteran Friday night revealed the man actually died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound, the Thurston County Coroner said Monday afternoon.
The autopsy also showed the man had a gun shot wound in his stomach that did not contribute to his death, the cororner said.
Olympia police said Officer Mike Hovda shot the man after a foot chase following a call about a possible drunk driver near Creekwood Court SE. The man raised a handgun threatening the officer, Olympia police said in a statement released earlier Monday.
A gun was found near the man’s body following the shooting in a grassy area near 12th Avenue SE and Boulevard.
The man, identified as Bradden W. Ferber, 53, died at the scene.
Hovda has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
